2016-2019 CCF Galas
35th Annual Gala: THE CCF AWARDS
November 2, 2019
The 35th Annual CCF Gala was held Saturday, November 2nd, 2019 at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt, MD. We are incredibly grateful to all who participated, sponsored, and otherwise supported this event.
More than 500 individuals joined CCF and Mark Viviano, as emcee, at a new location and recognized Extraordinary Families – children and their families who have endured, fought, overcome, grieved and persevered in spite of this life-changing diagnosis. Two amazing young people – Darren Leonard and Grace Callwood – were featured with their families in a video played during the program. Many other children that evening were presented with medals, recognizing the battles they have overcome with having a diagnosis of cancer.
CCF also granted awards to nine area researchers, and to several programs and facilities making significant differences in the lives of these children, totalling nearly $1 million.
Also recognized were the 2019 CCF Fighter Award: CohnReznick and the CCF Hero Award: Lance Cook and Tino’s Italian Bistro.

CCF Gala Honorees
2018 Gift of Life Honoree: Safeway and Tom Lofland, President, Safeway Eastern Division
CCF is honored to present Safeway, and Tom Lofland, President, Safeway Eastern Division, with the 2018 Gift of Life Award, which is presented to a company with outstanding community philanthropy and a commitment to CCF’s mission to find cures for pediatric cancer.
Throughout our 35-year partnership, Safeway has been a strong ally and provided critical support through the Safeway Foundation. Under the recent leadership of Tom Lofland, Safeway continues to demonstrate its commitment to finding treatments and cures for pediatric cancer.
Hero Award: Noah Grove
At just five years of age, Noah Grove won his fight against osteosarcoma, but it resulted in a left leg amputation. With treatment and support from Georgetown Lombardi, Noah has never looked back. He has succeeded on and off the field (and ice), first as part of the 2014 US Amputee Soccer World Cup Team, to most recently with the U.S. National Sled Hockey team, where Noah and his team won the gold at the 2018 Winter Paralympics in South Korea. With his first year of college under his belt, Noah plans to ultimately become an orthopedic oncologist in order to help young patients facing a situation similar to his own. This young man’s resilience and dedication make for a hero in every sense of the word.
Fighter Award: Azrael, Franz, Schwab & Lipowitz, LLC
One must go back to the beginning of CCF to appreciate how important the law firm of Azrael, Franz, Schwab & Lipowitz, LLC has been to CCF. In 1983, Shirley Howard asked her good friend and attorney, Edward Azrael, to incorporate The Children’s Cancer Foundation, Inc. and serve on its first Board of Directors. Edward readily responded to Shirley’s request, and or the next 35 years, Azrael Franz has continued to honor Edward’s commitment to Shirley by providing CCF with valued legal counsel on a pro bono basis. Jonathan Azrael followed in his father’s footsteps and served on the CCF Board until 2015. CCF is truly honored to extend the 2018 Fighter Award to our long-time partner in the fight against children’s cancer.
