Before our founder Shirley Howard passed away, she designated dollars to annually support a special weekend for The Children’s Inn.
In honoring this special weekend and in loving memory of Shirley, CCF created The Shirley’s Kids Fund, which is designated to support meaningful programs for pediatric patients in active treatment and their families. Each year, CCF allocates funds to The Children’s Inn for this special weekend.

Five families staying at The Children’s Inn participated in this year’s respite weekend that included a trip to Six Flags, and touring around Annapolis. For photos and more info…
5th Annual Shirley’s Kids Weekend – September 8-9, 2018
This year, families headed to Baltimore where they explored the tall ships of the Inner Harbor and the National Aquarium. The older children also took part in Breakout – an “escape room” to challenge their puzzle and cooperation skills. Like past years, the weekend began with stopping off at Giant to receive bags filled with snacks and drinks for their weekend. CCF loves to provide this weekend away – a chance for a family to do family things outside of a hospital and, if for only for a few moments, allow these children to feel like “regular” kids.
4th Annual Shirley’s Kids Weekend – September 9-10, 2017
Six families departed The Children’s Inn Saturday morning to pick up snacks at Giant Food (Store #132, 10400 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda) to begin their weekend of excitement.
CCF Board member and Director of Food Safety & Quality Assurance, Terry McGowan, addressed the group and handed them snacks for their day of activities.
CCF Board President, Jerry Chadwick, joined the group for lunch and the group enjoyed a team photo in front of Giant Food.
The weather was glorious. The smiles were big. The day was full of activities, including mini golf, corn hole, a BBQ lunch, caricature drawing and much more.
CCF is proud of this enduring partnership with The Children’s Inn and grateful to provide a weekend of enjoyment for families who are facing some unimaginable challenges.
A huge thank you to Giant Food and Terry McGowan for supporting this program.
