Terry McGowan wears many hats. He serves as Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance with Retail Business Services (RBS) supporting Giant Food. He proudly serves as a new grandfather to Terence McGowan III, and he serves with passion for The Children’s Cancer Foundation, Inc.’s Executive Committee as Secretary. He’s proud to say that Giant Food is CCF’s largest donor!
Before Terry became part of the Giant Food/RBS team in 2011, Terry’s commitment to end childhood cancer started much earlier, as a child. “Having a brother with leukemia at the age of five inspired me to join The Children’s Cancer Foundation as a board member,” says Terry. “It’s an honor to represent Giant Food in this capacity and I’m proud of the outstanding work Giant food does during their annual pediatric cancer fundraising campaign.”
Terry’s heart, passion, commitment and support is a main reason our partnership with Giant Food thrives. Beyond board member duties, over the years Terry has helped us organize the annual Research Symposium, helped with move-in for the Gala, participating in community fundraisers for CCF, and helping arrange the annual Giant Food send-off for CCF’s respite weekend for The Children’s Inn families, to name a few. Terry is the type of board member every non-profit president wants: one who always goes above and beyond.
Terry’s personal commitment and Giant Food’s loyal and generous support though their annual pediatric cancer campaign has made CCF’s partnership with Giant Food even stronger. As a recipient of this campaign’s proceeds, CCF is able to fund critical pediatric cancer research, ensuring that advances are made in finding better treatments, with less toxic side effects and ultimately, finding cures.
For the past 18 years, Giant Food has hosted a pediatric cancer fundraising program, which is running this year from August 13th through October 13th, spanning September’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Their campaign involves all 164 Giant Food stores in the DMV area, many hosting raffles, grilling events, and other ways to raise awareness and funds. At every store, shoppers can ‘round up’ at their local Giant Food register or online, or make a $5 donation to receive a coupon book containing $45 worth of coupon. 100% of the funds raised are allocated to CCF as well as to John Hopkins Hospital. CCF is incredibly grateful for this support.
Giant Food has been a CCF donor since our earliest years. One of the most direct ways Giant Food has helped us advance pediatric cancer research is to fund a promising young researcher with the annual CCF Giant Food NextGen Award of $100,000. Since 2013, these grants enable a younger researcher to advance their theories and ideas in a constructive setting, setting their research and their career on a promising path. The 2022 NextGen awardee, Rosa Nguyen, M.D., Ph.D. from the National Cancer Institute, will be honored on November 5 at our annual Gala.
Terry supports CCF in GIANT ways and we are forever grateful.
